Into the Silent Land: A Guide to the Christian Practice of Contemplation by Martin Laird. I find Martin Laird is a fantastic cheerleader for the practice of mindfulness. This book probably has more relevant bible verses encouraging the practice of meditation than any other that I have come across. One moving anecdote tells of a convict in prison who cuts himself as a result of trauma in his past. The cutting is done to feel the pain on the outside not the inside. The prisoner is released through the practice of meditation (which results from a meditation non-profit that ministers specifically to prisoners). I found the narration particularly helpful. If you want to teach yourself mindfulness meditation you would need to use this book in combination with another mindfulness book to get going, but for the purposes of inspiring yourself to start your journey this book is a must.
