Being Mindful, Being Christian: A guide to mindful discipleship by by Revd Dr Joanna Collicutt, Dr Roger Bretherton, Dr. Jennifer Brickman. This book has multiple authors all associated with BACiP the British Association for Christians in Psychology. One of the authors, Dr. Roger Bretherton, is the author of “The Character Course” which contains free resources for church based groups to engage in various exercises (some involving mindfulness). I found the “Mindful God” chapter particularly good as a source of Biblical background on mindfulness. Every chapter has a list of further reading books related to the chapter content. The book makes the case that mindfulness is an entirely valid part of church history (although links with Eastern Religions have caused disquiet: “Mindfulness was not entirely foreign, if anything it was all too familiar.” The authors say that if you are worried about whether “mindfulness is OK for Christians” this this book was written for you. The authors give a good short definition of mindfulness: “paying attention to the present moment without wishing it were otherwise.”
