Mindfulness and Character Strengths A Practical Guide to Flourishing

Mindfulness and Character Strengths A Practical Guide to Flourishing by Ryan M. Niemiec. I was interested to learn all the different social settings for this course (e.g. colleges, schools and prisons). Given the epidemic of depression and anxiety evident among college students, a group mindfulness course would seem to be a good idea for freshmen in general. One aspect of this that was similar to the Science of Mindfulness by Ryan Siegel was the emphasis on presenting research evidence to support the effectiveness of different exercises mentioned on the course. However, Niemiec is writing for a slightly more college-level audience so some general readers might find this level of scientific detail makes the book a hard read. If your intention is to try to run a mindfulness group some of these sections could probably be skipped. If you want to find a character course presented from within a Christian Framework there is an 8 week course presented by the British Christian Psychologist Dr. Roger Bretherton. Each week includes a short video talk by Dr. Bretherton and the talk in the form of a text file (in case someone at your church wants to adapt the talk and deliver it in person). All the course materials are free and can be accessed on this web page.
