The Science of Mindfulness: A Research-Based Path to Well-Being by Ron Siegel. This is easily the best of the Buddhist leaning mindfulness guides. I should point out that the author Ron Siegel does not actually do much to promote Buddhist ideas in the book. It is merely that many of his illustrations come from Buddhism. The audio book is based on a series of lectures in front of a live audience so his delivery seems much more entertaining that his other book in the list entitled The Mindfulness Solution. Siegel does a great job of reviewing the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of mindfulness in reducing depression and anxiety. It even quotes a controlled experiment in which a group of silicon valley techies were given mindfulness training and were found to have stronger immune systems than matched control subjects. The end of audio book has a series of recorded audio meditations which could be used as a starters meditation course. Siegel easily takes the prize for having the most entertaining public speaking style of any of the authors in this list. He tells one story about going to a retreat center just after his beloved girlfriend ditched him for her ex-boyfriend. He describes his early meditations during this visit (and I am paraphrasing here) as a mixture of “Porn and Slasher Movies”.
